The appraisal process for first-party insurance claims is a policy provision used to resolve disputes between a policyholder and an insurance company regarding the value of a claim or the extent of damage from a peril. The process begins when the policyholder and insurer cannot agree on the amount of a loss.

Each party (the policyholder and the insurer) selects a competent, impartial, and independent appraiser. These appraisers should be knowledgeable about the type of property or damage involved. The appraisers must act impartially and are often professionals like contractors, adjusters, or other experts.

In most cases the appraisers jointly select a neutral third party, called an umpire, to help resolve any disputes that may arise between the appraisers. The appraisers submit their findings to each other. If they agree on the amount, that value sets the loss amount. It does not address liability or policy coverage. Each party pays for their own appraiser, and the cost of the umpire is shared equally. The process is generally faster and less expensive than going to court.
